NPM 2020 Day 6: Songbird Dreams

If we’re going to talk about animal poems set at night, I also have to discuss this collection.

1-Songbird COVER“A Songbird Dreams of Singing” is also set at night with poems about animals, but this isn’t about the animals that stay awake while we sleep.  This collection is about HOW a variety of animals sleep (and some in very odd ways).  And of course, when you have a collection like this, there are nonfiction sidebars included.  It’s beautifully done and definitely worth a read.

My favorite poem in this book taught me something new, something I didn’t know before but felt like I should’ve known already.  The illustration has also stayed with me in my mind.  I find it fascinating!  So of course, I had to share it.  There will be a picture of the spread, then a closeup of the poem “The Mysterious Sleep of Mother Whales” by Kate Hosford, a closeup of the nonfiction facts, and of course a picture of the illustration by Jennifer M. Potter.  You have to see all the parts of this.

  1. Another great one Jena. I didn’t know this about sperm whales either! Now I can’t wait to read about the other animals in this collection.
