NPM 2023 Day 15: IF THIS BIRD HAD POCKETS

Did you know that April 29th is Poem In Your Pocket Day?  This picture book is perfect for that day and the young readers at schools that celebrate it.

IF THIS BIRD HAD POCKETS: A POEM IN YOUR POCKET DAY CELEBRATION is a collection of persona poems written by Amy VanDerwater.  Each poem is told from a different animal’s point of view with the conceit that a child is imagining what poem each animal might carry for Poem In Your Pocket Day if they had pockets.  OH how I loved this book!  It’s fantastic!  And there were so many favorite poems that I really struggled to pick just one.

The poem I chose was both a favorite animal and a favorite poem.  It’s a stunningly simple and intricate poem paired with a gorgeous illustration that suits it perfectly.
