NPM 2024 Day 4: GALAPAGOS ISLANDS OF CHANGE

I mentioned last year that I was a fan of Leslie Bulion’s science poetry picture books.  This is another one in her habitat or location study series and it’s fantastic.

GALAPAGOS ISLANDS OF CHANGE is a science poetry picture book that explores the flora and fauna around the Galapagos islands.  I had no idea there was such a diversity of life there that ONLY existed on those islands.  The variety of poetry structures was a pleasure to read, but I enjoyed the sidebars every bit as much.  In fact, I was inspired to further research the variety of ghost crab only found on the islands and then paint it.  There was so much here to fascinate me, that I can only imagine it would captivate young readers every bit as much.

The illustrations by Becca Stadtlander are gorgeous.  She added so much color and vibrancy to the environment of this book that it only added to fascination.  And the foreward and back matter only helped to increase the urgency of saving this environment.

It was hard to pick just one poem to share (my constant dilemma) but in the end, I picked an underwater scene that I kept returning to over and over again.
