Somewhere in the world it is green, but it isn’t here in Alaska! That is perhaps why today’s poetry picture book felt so familiar.
ICE CYCLE is a collection of poems about the variety of formations of ice. It’s hard to wax romantic about ice when we’ve had record snow falls this winter here (that are STILL waiting to melt away and ice is still very much present). There’s actually a LOT of local interest this year as to whether or not we will break the record OF ALL TIME for the most snow fall. We’re currently tied for second place with the 1954-55 winter at 132.6 inches! We just need a little more than 2 inches to beat the record (and it’s been snowing a dusting of flakes almost every night for the last two weeks and melting off during the day). It feels more like the horror of THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW where the world freezes to death.
Yet, this collection of poetry reminded me of some of the beauty that I do love about ice. It peaked my curiosity about other ice formations and reminded me of some I’ve seen in person as well. This is a fun exploration on the topic that I can imagine kids using in tropical classrooms with fascination (as well as in classrooms that do experience winter). I picked one of my favorite poems to share here.
