NPM 2025 Day 17: GREAT GUSTS

Do you know the name of the winds in your neck-of-the-woods?

GREAT GUSTS is a book all about the science and phenomena of wind (with fantastic illustrations that brilliantly show something that’s invisible), as well as famous winds around the world. I didn’t know there were so many of them that had been named! I was disappointed to see a poem come close to my own territory, but NOT mention Chinook winds (which are warm winds that happen here in winter and can melt everything in sight to ice). I was also surprised to learn that the windy city of Chicago had named one of their winds (and asked a friend of mine who grew up there if she knew of the name–she didn’t!). Yet the poem I chose to share explained a phenomena to me that I didn’t really understand until I read this. Hawaii will always have a place in my heart and the wind that blows there has a name too!

And if you’re looking for more poetry fun this month, be sure to check out the Kidlitosphere Event Roundup!  Thank you for stopping by!
