Poetry that helps children to both be seen AND encourages them through difficult moments? Yes, please!!!
SEE US BLOOM: POEMS ON COMPASSION, ACCEPTANCE, AND BRAVERY is a collection of poems that is meant to inspire young readers. Yet the author, Kyunghee Kim, also tells the reader in the foreward that it’s the story of her immigration to the US from South Korea when she was 8 years old. This framework (and foreword) encourages the reader to know that it’s okay to “feel many feelings.” And let’s not forget the beautiful illustrations by Emily Paik! They add layers to each page.
All of this combined is what makes it an incredibly powerful collection, NOT didactic (which it could easily be). It’s created from a place of memory. It doesn’t focus on the fears and uncertainties such a big move could bring. Instead, it finds its way out of the mire of dark emotions and tries to tell the reader that they are not alone.
To give you a true feel for the book, I’m sharing a full spread. This actually includes two poems, but it will give you an idea of the flavor of the book. I hope you enjoy it.
