NPM 2020 Day 19: How to Read a Book

I have a hard time reviewing books that are a poem, instead of a collection of poems, but this one is worth it!

Today’s picture book, “How to Read a Book,” is a poem written by Kwame Alexander and illustrated by one of my favorite illustrators, Melissa Sweet.  Even so, I wasn’t prepared for how much I would love it.  After all, we all know how to read a book, right?  Oh but this poem.  sigh  It’s beautiful!  I can only share one image from it with you today, but you MUST track down this book and read it, if you haven’t already.  I was practically drooling on the book while reading it.  It’s that delicious!  AND it has won the 2020 Lee Bennett Hopkins award.  Of course!

I will share one of my favorite segments from the book that felt like a poem almost all by itself.  It was also one of my favorite images from the book.  As a bonus, I will include the afterwards from both Kwame and Melissa about the book project.  It’s a MUST read!!

And if you’re looking for more poetry fun this month, be sure to check out the Kidlitosphere Event Roundup!
