NPM 2026 Day 7: A FOREST SONG

What song does the forest sing?

A FOREST SONG is a poetry picture book where the poem spans the entire book. I think I knew of the concept of a Cento poem but I didn’t know the form itself until I read this book. It’s a poem made up of lines from other poems. I have written one of these myself (a tribute to a friend’s cat in passing) but I didn’t know that’s what it was called. Here Kirsten Hall strings together so many lines from poems about forests that it’s hard to recognize every single one. BUT never fear! The attributions are all included in the back matter. It was fun to see what I recognized and didn’t. It’s also an incredibly beautiful way to honor the woods.

I picked one section accompanied by the beautiful illustrations by Evan Turk. As per usual, I share a close up, then the full spread so you can appreciate the illustration that accompanies the poem as well.

And if you’re looking for more poetry fun this month, be sure to check out the Kidlitosphere Event Roundup!  Thank you for stopping by!
