Mary Ann Hoberman, former children’s poet laureate, passed away in 2023. And yet, as is common in publishing, here we have a lovely collection of her words illustrated by the brilliant Marla Frazee that will live long after she is gone.
HOW ELEGANT THE ELEPHANT gathers together many of Mary Ann Hoberman’s animal poems into one place (some old, some new). She had once collaborated with Marla Frazee in the past and they finally came together again here, though sadly Mary Ann Hoberman passed away before the book was published. The sense of humor of both poet and illustrator still shines here though, as bold a ray of sunshine as any.
As always, it’s hard to pick just one, but I did. I highlight the poem I liked and the spread (which includes a second poem on the other side, but you have to see the whole image). Enjoy!
