This is the last day of April that I will highlight a poetry picture book I previously shared last year.
GRIEF IS AN ELEPHANT is a picture book poem. It takes the metaphor of grief being an animal to poetic heights that I haven’t seen done anywhere else quite like it. The first animal is an elephant and the image of it resting its head on that little girl’s chest will never leave me. Because that is definitely what grief feels like.
But it doesn’t stop there. The metaphor changes throughout the story and arrives at a healing moment that feels SO real, it can only be poetry. The illustrations beautifully add to the theme and mood. Trust me when I say, this is one you won’t want to miss. I interviewed both the author and illustrator of this one. You can read those interviews here.
And if you’re looking for more poetry fun this month, be sure to check out the Kidlitosphere Event Roundup! Thank you for stopping by!
