Poetry about the Mariana Trench? Yes, please!
DEEP, DEEP DOWN is a lyrical picture book all about the Mariana Trench. Poetry really can be found anywhere, can’t it? And just like the author, I was sure there were terrifying creatures to be found in the deepest depths of the ocean, but I was wrong. This book celebrates the cold and quiet critters found in one of the greatest chasms in our world. There are not horrors, but awe-inspiring wonders that await the reader here. The illustrations by Juan Calle, a scientific illustrator, are perfect for this book. I was even surprised to learn of a new ocean critter I hadn’t heard of before and I would desperately like to know more! I love a book that inspires me to inquire further.
As this is a poem that weaves over the entire book, I chose two spreads to share with you here. This is the only way I could truly share some of the great scope of the book and what it achieves. Besides, I have to give you a little bit of context for that second page that has one of the most memorable lines for me. Enjoy!
