NPM 2022 Day 17: The Dirt Book

Speaking of earth, have you read David L. Harrison’s DIRT BOOK yet?

1-Dirt COVERTHE DIRT BOOK: POEMS ABOUT ANIMALS THAT LIVE BENEATH OUR FEET is a poetry picture book collection that explores the world of dirt!  Perhaps most surprising of all is the design of the book.  Although it is a longer horizontal rectangle shaped book, you have to turn it sideways to read down the page.  That is a brilliant choice!

In this collection are poems about earthworms, ants, and many other things that live and work in the dirt.  As per usual, David delves into the subject with great panache (did you see what I did there?).  It’s a fantastic exploration with STEM possibilities galore for the classroom.

And of course the illustrations by Kate Cosgrove are just as fabulous.  I really wanted to share the image from the first page, but I won’t.  You must track this book down yourself and read it to find it.  You won’t be disappointed.  It’s gorgeous.

Here is just one poem from the book:
