Sometimes I go back and read older collections of poets I have become fascinated with and that is the case today.
ON THE FARM is an older collection of poems written by David Elliott and illustrated by Holly Meade that was released in 2012. This is the fourth poetry picture book collection of David’s that I have read and each one delights.
When these collections were originally done, the illustrations were done just by Holly Meade in a wood block print style. I’m not sure why they went away from that style, but each book is its own treasure.
I chose a poem today that delighted me the most because my upcoming picture book features a rooster as a main character who is having trouble crowing. As such, I couldn’t resist this poem.

I’m pretty sure I’ve read this one. It’s great!
This is a wonderful book! I teach music, and often integrate these poems into class, before singing about one of the animals represented. The illustrations are marvelous.
