NPM 2024 Day 2: BEING A CAT

I’m going to guess that if you’re a fan of poetry picture books, you’ve probably already seen this one.  BUT I had to share it because a) it’s about cats and b) because it’s a sequel of sorts to BEING A DOG (which I highlighted last year).

0-COVERBEING A CAT is a poem that runs the length of the book.  It is again gorgeously illustrated by Pete Oswald with cut paper.  Where BEING A DOG was about meditation (of sorts), this one encourages curiosity.  Be like the cat and be curious about the world around you.  Notice how they notice.  It’s a brilliant concept to encourage young readers to think outside of themselves.

I share a few spreads from the book to really show some of the fun word play that goes into the book, as well as the variety of layouts that Oswald creates to pair with each bit.  They’re a really fun combination worth studying.
