NPM 2024 Day 8: HARLEM AT FOUR

I love finding a poetry picture book unlike others in the market and that is definitely today’s picture book.

0-CoverHARLEM AT FOUR is a poetry picture book that is a love poem written by a father (Dr. Michael Datcher) for his daughter, Harlem. It “disrupts absentee stereotypes” by promoting the snapshot of his loving relationship with his daughter and proving that loving black father-daughter relationships are real. But the book doesn’t stop there.  As if that weren’t enough, the author also adds a second section that is a love song to the Harlem the little girl is named after: the Harlem neighborhood that would become the seat of the Harlem Renaissance, also highlighted in its fourth year here.  Add in the gorgeous art work by Frank Morrison and you’re in for a real treat.  I’m pleased to say I haven’t seen anything quite like this.  It’s an oddball, but it’s glorious and I absolutely love it.
