I love it when art and text are so intricately woven together that it’s impossible to tell where one ends and the other begins. That is the case with today’s poetry picture book.
WE ARE BRANCHES is a nonfiction poetry picture book companion to SWIRL BY SWIRL (2018). This book pairs the same wonderful team of Joyce Sidman and Beth Krommes again. It explores a different shape in nature that I’m surprised to admit I hadn’t given very much thought. I’ve seen plenty of books on the swirls in nature and the golden ration, but branches? Joyce’s poem spans the book and each page highlights a different type of branch found in nature that again, I just hadn’t seen a connection with before. I love when a book makes you think about the world around you like this. I share one of my favorite spreads, but I’m not sure it will help you to grasp much of the poem (which is glorious). SO I’m also including a paragraph about back matter on that same spread (because of course there’s back matter!).

Love the books by this duo! Have you read BEFORE MORNING, also written and illustrated by Sidman and Krommes? It’s written in the form of an invocation. All their work together is so gorgeous!
Yes I have and I completely agree! It’s no wonder Krommes won the Caldecott either.
Oooooh! Nice!
