NPM 2025 Day 8: A TREE IS A COMMUNITY

I adore books about trees and I’m surprised I haven’t seen one like this before.

David L. Harrison is an incredibly prolific poet. If you’re not familiar with his many books, you can see some of his previous works I’ve highlighted on my blog. His books almost always have the perfect educational angle for classroom inclusion and today’s book is no exception.

A TREE IS A COMMUNITY explores how one tree is an ecosystem for bugs, animals, and people. It’s an incredible concept and yet one so simple I found myself flabbergasted that no one had thought of it before. And even if they had, no one has quite the same approach as David. Although this book is one continuous poem spread over multiple pages (thus harder to highlight), there were some lines that just grabbed me with their imagery. I loved them so much I share them here. I also love the color palette Kate Cosgrove chose for the book. It’s so sunny and warm! Perfect for this time of year when everything seems dull and gray still. Enjoy!

And if you’re looking for more poetry fun this month, be sure to check out the Kidlitosphere Event Roundup!  Thank you for stopping by!
