This book is for the quiet kids: the ones who rarely speak up but smile quietly at you; the ones who sit silently at the side of the playground watching an ant; the ones who are perfectly fine just being in nature without making a fuss.

I love the whole idea of today’s poetry picture book QUIET AS MUD. Let’s start with the fact that it’s written by Jane Yolen (whom I adore) who was inspired by a quote from Margaret Wise Brown in an article in the New Yorker in 2022! What a connection! BUT that is Yolen for you. She finds inspiration in … well, quite frankly everything. It’s why she has over 400 books published to date!
Now let’s add in the glorious illustrations by Nicole Wong. Every page is a revelation and something to ponder. This is a collection of similes that mean to honor quiet children and cause other readers to wonder. And BOY, do they deliver! This whole book is one poem that travels from page to page with moments that will make you pause. It’s beautiful! I only share one spread from the book so you’ll have to read it yourself to truly appreciate it. Enjoy!

Oh this is beautiful! I hope libraries are putting it with the picture books and not in an obscure poetry section.
Poetry picture books are usually with all the others. Not always though!
