NPM 2025 Day 29: WATCH ME BLOOM

It’s another book of poems about blooming things, but this one has a different twist!

WATCH ME BLOOM is a collection of haiku about flowers written with the intent to encourage mindfulness and helping readers to rediscover their natural surroundings. Every poem is about a flower, yet they also contain so many other layers. The author-illustrator Krina Patel-Sage has a note by the copyright that she even embedded the Five Ways of Wellbeing into the book (which are steps that are meant to help “boost mental health, increase positivity, and help us get the best out of life”). Doesn’t that sound like something we all could use right now?

There’s back matter about the flowers too (“fun floral facts”) that I actually found fascinating. Once upon a time I found a book at the library about the language of flowers (an older language that explained what and why certain flowers meant certain things–things we’ve forgotten). Oddly enough, I didn’t keep track of the title and have been searching to find it again ever since. THIS book comes as close to that as I’ve seen in years. It’s obviously not quite the same thing, but it’s still a delight.

I chose a poem about daffodils because one of my favorite poems is I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth and I couldn’t help but think of it when I saw this one. I include the whole spread (as a possible way to cheat and showcase TWO of the wonderful poems in this book). Enjoy!

And if you’re looking for more poetry fun this month, be sure to check out the Kidlitosphere Event Roundup!  Thank you for stopping by!
