Today’s poetry picture book is based on a very familiar tune I remember quite well from childhood.
MONSTERS IN THE BRINY is written to follow the tune of “What do you do with a drunken sailor.” It isn’t mentioned anywhere in the book, only alluded to (even with the sheet music at the back). I remember singing that song in elementary school and years later wondering what the heck we were singing that song for! BUT here, it works like magic as a great backbone for a fantasy tale of incredible sea creatures. There are cranky krakens and many more incredibly fun critters and lyrics. What a great way to capitalize on the sea shanty craze! And what a great way to get your reader to hum all through the book. I show only one page so you get the idea of what to expect from this little gem.
