NPM 2024 Day 9: HOME

Today’s poetry picture book comes from France (translated and re-published in the US, of course).

0-CoverHOME is another stunning picture book by Isabelle Simler.  If you’ve followed me for a while, you might remember me highlighting her previous book in 2021 (SWEET DREAMERS).  This one uses the same illustration approach with a different subject matter: animal homes.  Here Isabelle explores such a wide variety of fascinating homes built by animals with poetry that each page will absorb and enchant the reader.  From birds nests, spider webs, to octopus lairs deep in the ocean, Isabelle weaves a book together from the same materials these creatures use (leaves, twigs, foam, etc.).  We, the reader, get a close up view of each home with the chance to investigate the strange and peculiar homes that abound on almost every continent of our world.  Is it any wonder it won the 2023 Youth Architecture Prize?

Once again I struggled to pick just one poem to share.  It may surprise you to find out that I chose, not the ocean settings, but one high up in the trees.

Please note: I was also given a copy of the book to review by the publisher (Eerdmans Books), but as always, the opinions are all mine.

And if you’re looking for more poetry fun this month, be sure to check out the Kidlitosphere Event Roundup!  Thank you for stopping by!
