What better poetry form is there for exploring nature than Haiku?

CLIMBING THE VOLCANO is a poetry picture book of a different sort. Here there is a story that unfolds through many different haiku. Not exactly a collection of poems and not exactly one poem stretched over the book, this book attempts something a little different and manages to do it very well. Here a young child is with family on a hike about to climb Oregon’s South Sister volcano. There is a haiku that so beautifully captures the sense of wonder every step of the way.
I chose to share the very first haiku from the book as the illustration that accompanies it takes my breath away. The words and illustrations work very much hand-in-hand here, inviting all readers to explore. Enjoy!

Perhaps a haiku narrative? Love this idea….
Yes! It kinda is. It has a young main character who goes on a journey.
